A great testimonial from Sean Merrion of the Parachute Regiment and participant on the Pride-P programme. It’s working for him and let’s hope for many others. Good luck, Sean.

“I just wanted to drop you a line to thankyou for sending my CV to your contacts, Ive had a chat with one of them already.
The whole Pride P process and constant contact with my mentor Richard Wright has been most helpful and for me has helped me no end in my quest to find a job,
even though ive still not found anything the help and ideas ive had from Richard are great and have made me much more confident when it comes work and also contacting people that i probably wouldnt have had the guts to get in touch with before.”

IOD Essex Branch Administrator,Tina Weavers, recently received an email with what was framed as a ‘strange request’:

“Hi, I wonder if you can help please?
I’m an IoD member and have been charged with seeking your advice. My company is seeking to take on a business student, for a medium-term placement. We want someone who can help us with a business idea, to see if it’s worth pursuing. Given sufficient time we could do the work ourselves but we don’t have the necessary resource and wonder if you can suggest contacts or a suitable framework that will get us a high-grade student for up to six months.”

Tina responded instantly and followed up after a discussion with Paul, to the delight of the enquirer who replied:

“Tina thanks, we’ll look at that too. You might be interested to know that I’m a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and your response has already been more prompt, caring and useful than I got from the CIM. Well done to the IoD!”

The Essex Business Consortium has been arranging meetings to discuss the replacement of  RDAs and Business Link with a new concept – Local Enterprise Councils. See the PDF below for more details.

Three peaks, 24 hours and a target to raise £2,000 for charity. That was the challenge undertaken by Paul Finch, Chairman of the Essex Institute of Directors, and two businessmen from the Southend-on-Sea Round Table and 41 Club, with the aim to raise money in aid of Help for Heroes.

Starting at Ben Nevis in Scotland at 5.00pm on Friday 14 May, Paul, Bill Shirley and Richard Metcalf began the challenge to reach the summit of the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours.

After completing the Scottish leg in five hours the intrepid trio made their way to Scafell Pike in the Lake District. The six hour drive allowed just enough time to recover and complete their next hurdle in three hours and 50 minutes. Next, their route took them to Mount Snowdon in Wales. Impressively, the team completed their gruelling challenge in just over 24 hours, despite Paul requiring treatment to his knee at the summit of Mount Snowdon.

Paul Finch, Chairman of the Essex Institute of Directors and Managing Director of Southend-based business Spares4Appliances, said: “This was one of the most gruelling challenges we have undertaken. However, the adverse weather conditions, injuries and lack of sleep were all worth it to raise money for charity. Even the deep snow and thick cloud at Ben Nevis did not dampen our spirits, and seeing the sunrise at 4.30am in the Lake District was breathtaking.

“We could not have done it without the help of our driver Paul Marsh, who ensured we made it comfortably and safely to each mountain.  I would also like to thank all of our generous sponsors, including Steve’s Van Hire, Spares4Applicanes, our friends, family and colleagues.”

Launched in October 2007, Help for Heroes aims to help people who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces, and their dependents, by making grants available to purchase equipment for their rehabilitation or grants to other charities that can assist them.

On Tuesday 11 May the Essex Institute of Directors welcomed its new Chairman, Treasurer and Committee members at its Annual Members’ Meeting at the Lancaster Colchester Showroom.

During the event, Paul Finch of Spares4Applicances was named the new Chairman Elect and Peter Gardiner of Chantrey Vellacott DFK was named the new Treasurer. In addition, new committee members Kath Wright of Essex County Council, Nichola Cain of Voice Communications, Damon Langlois of Green Light Print Solutions, Tim Rose of Growbridge Advisors, Tim Price of Park City Consulting and Ian West of One Marketing were also welcomed to the Essex Institute of Directors.

Afterwards, an auction took place to test drive a Ferrari California and a Maserati kindly donated by Lancaster Colchester. Competition was fierce, and the winning bidders raised £350 for the charity Help for Heroes.

Paul Finch, Chairman of the Essex Institute of Directors, said: “I am honoured to be following in the footsteps of many successful directors who have made IoD Essex the success it is today. With the economy in the state it is, there is much to be done to help local businesses get the best advice, lobbying and support they require. One of our key areas of focus is the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where we are very keen to ensure that all SMEs in Essex get the chance to be involved.

“The previous chair, Juliet Price, has set a challenging act to follow with her energetic enthusiasm and passion. On behalf of the Essex Institute of Directors I thank Juliet for her time, commitment and all that she has achieved.

“I would also like to thank everybody for their generosity in helping us to raise £350 for the charity Help for Heroes.”

The Essex branch of the Institute of Directors is one of the largest in the UK. Over 40% are chairmen, CEOs or MDs and a further 45% are directors or partners. Three quarters of its members work in companies employing less than 500 staff. It is run by a group of members from diverse business backgrounds who give their time voluntarily for a period of up to three years.

Launched in October 2007, Help for Heroes aims to help people who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces, and their dependents, by making grants available to purchase equipment for their rehabilitation or grants to other charities that can assist them.
