Wine as an Investment
The Colchester Wine Company
Friday, 11 March 2011
(7.30 for 8.00 – carriages at 11.00)
Vintage assets – the new era of wine investment
Investing in wine has moved on from the ‘buy two cases, sell one and drink for nothing’ approach of the past. The twin pillars of growing scarcity and rising desirability, as the wine ages, remain in place. But there is a new driver in the fine wine market. Interest from emerging economies has grown from a trickle to a torrent in the last 15 years and new buyers who want to drink the very best wines now have the disposable income to afford them. At the same time the international scene has come of age with electronic trading platforms and rapidly improving transportation logistics, so that it is easier than ever to access these burgeoning markets. It is no surprise that the Liv-Ex 100 index for fine wine increased by over 40% in 2010.
In an evening which will be as enjoyable as it will be informative, join us at this prestigious venue for an event at which you will learn about the financial benefits of wine investment accompanied by an excellent three course dinner with wine tasting.
Hugo Rose MW, frequent contributor to wine journals (including The Director Magazine) in both the UK and abroad, will talk us through what many financial establishments are saying is the ‘best performing investment of the decade’. There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask Hugo questions before we settle down to dinner prepared by Craig Formoy, executive chef and owner of The Mixing Bowl Company.
Smoked salmon on dill bilini with creme fraiche dressing
Venison haunch steak with creamed celeriac and juniper and orange jus
Vanilla creme brulee with winter berries and shortbread biscuits
Coffee and truffles
(Dietary requirements can be catered for separately)
The evening will begin with a sparkling wine reception and each course at dinner will be accompanied by wines (with tasting notes) to complement the food.

Directors’ Breakfast Club – Leadership in Complex Environments – 11 November 2010 (Remembrance Day)
We are delighted to announce that Colonel Stuart Tootal DSO OBE, ex-Commander of the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (3 PARA) will be presenting at our Remembrance Day event. Stuart had a highly successful career as a soldier in the elite Parachute Regiment and was tipped to become a future head of the Army. In 2005 he was awarded a DSO for outstanding leadership and gallantry as the Commanding Officer of the first UK Battle Group sent to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His resignation from the Army, citing the poor treatment of his wounded and equipping of his soldiers, came as a shock to his senior commanders and attracted widespread media attention.
He is now a respected media commentator on defence and security, he lectures on leadership in complex environments and is pursuing a career in corporate banking security. His book ‘Danger Close: Commanding 3 PARA in Afghanistan‘, published in 2009, has received widespread praise as a dramatic, and often moving, insight into the leadership of soldiers. His presentation will be followed by an informal discussion which will allow everyone to give their views from their own company’s or industry’s perspective and to ask Adam Posen questions. Book online or contact me at admin.essex@iod.net for further information.

IOD Essex Branch Administrator,Tina Weavers, recently received an email with what was framed as a ‘strange request’:
“Hi, I wonder if you can help please?
I’m an IoD member and have been charged with seeking your advice. My company is seeking to take on a business student, for a medium-term placement. We want someone who can help us with a business idea, to see if it’s worth pursuing. Given sufficient time we could do the work ourselves but we don’t have the necessary resource and wonder if you can suggest contacts or a suitable framework that will get us a high-grade student for up to six months.”
Tina responded instantly and followed up after a discussion with Paul, to the delight of the enquirer who replied:
“Tina thanks, we’ll look at that too. You might be interested to know that I’m a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and your response has already been more prompt, caring and useful than I got from the CIM. Well done to the IoD!”
The Essex Business Consortium has been arranging meetings to discuss the replacement of RDAs and Business Link with a new concept – Local Enterprise Councils. See the PDF below for more details.
